Question: Why is retirement so hard for men to enjoy?
Blethr: That's a question worth sitting with. Because it *is* hard for a lot of men, and I don't think it gets talked about honestly enough.
A big part of it is identity. For most men, work isn't just a job — it's the answer to "who are you?" You meet someone, first thing they ask is what you do. Forty years of that, and the job becomes the self. Then one day it's gone, and nobody's prepared you for that bit.
There's also the structure. Work gives you a reason to get up. A place to be. People who need you there. Retirement strips all that out at once. Some men thrive with the freedom. A lot find the silence deafening. And purpose. That's the quiet killer. Men often tie their sense of worth to being *useful* — providing, producing, fixing, building. When that stops, some start to feel like they're just... waiting. Which is a brutal place to be.
Then there's the social side. For a lot of men, their mates *are* their workmates. Retire, and that network quietly disappears. Nobody warns you about that either. The men who seem to do best in retirement are the ones who've built something outside of work — a hobby that absorbs them, a community, a role that still makes them feel needed.
What's bringing this up for you? Is it something you're heading towards, or watching someone else go through?
