Skinny Living Singer Opens Up About Depression

The band's frontman Brother Ryan Johnston has bravely opened up about how their new song 'Why' was inspired by his own bouts with depression in his youth and how his sister "saved" him.

 

“‘Why’ is an incredibly honest song that takes a lot from me,” he reveals. “It touches on how controlling and caging the mind can be, without even knowing it.

“It’s a really personal song for me – about a time in my life where my sister played a big part in helping me out of a space that I was in mentally that wasn’t the greatest place to be.”

The band have just released the video for the new song, which features Ryan's sister in it. “It’s always daunting making a video, wondering if it will bring the song across in the right way," Johnston says. "I feel like it does. It represents something a lot of us go through and hopefully demonstrates the power of unconditional love.”

'Why' is the lead track from the forthcoming '6' EP.' Skinny Living, a four-piece from Wakefield, draw on influences such as Bill Withers and Paolo Nutini.

Skinny Living began in 2013 when guitarist Will Booth was "first floored "by singer Ryan Johnston’s "incredible voice" at an open mic night in their hometown of Wakefield, before being augmented by Danny Hepworth (guitar) and Rhys Anderton (drums).
