The recent £500 million cuts in public spending include £18.8M in mental wellbeing programs. These cuts threaten vital support initiatives. It's crucial to reconsider these decisions. Prioritising mental wellbeing can prevent dire consequences. Scotland's Finance Secretary, Shona Robison, announced the budget reductions. These cuts risk deepening the ongoing mental wellbeing crisis.

Many men already face significant challenges. Public funding for technology-driven support services and digital interventions should be a vital part of any government strategy but is not. Cutting any resources for mental wellbeing support potentially puts lives at risk. This is why, as a charity, we have had to seek direct funding from the Scottish public. This funding helped us develop our digital strategy and research for the Blethr Platform. All other available funds were already tied up with existing programs that did not consider alternative strategies.

Why a government digital strategy is essential

First, digital tools provide a safe space for men. Our platform allows men to manage their mental wellbeing discreetly. These tools reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Lack of funding for these tools could discourage men from seeking assistance.

Second, public funds should support research and development. This kind of investment is crucial for innovative solutions that improve mental wellbeing. Without it, progress stalls. Our understanding of men's mental wellbeing must evolve. This evolution halts without adequate funding, compelling us to rely on public donations.

Third, mental wellbeing has a ripple effect on society. Poor mental wellbeing leads to lost productivity, strained relationships, and increased healthcare costs. Investing in mental wellbeing benefits everyone, not just those directly affected. Reducing any funding for mental wellbeing is shortsighted.

Some may argue that these cuts are necessary for economic stability. However, the cost of ignoring mental wellbeing is far greater. Preventing issues is more cost-effective than addressing crises. We must prioritize mental wellbeing funding in all budget discussions. Invest in digital tools that provide accessible self-exploration options. Continue supporting research for innovative mental wellbeing solutions. Raise awareness about the importance of mental wellbeing in public policy.

We aim to develop our Blethr Platform so that it can be used cost-effectively by other charities. This would enable charitable organizations, big or small, to benefit from our digital strategy. We urge policymakers to reconsider these cuts. The mental wellbeing of our community must be a priority. By taking action now, we can ensure a healthier future for all. Let's protect the resources that save lives.
