Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive disorder that affects both males and females.

The exact cause of IBS is not known, but it is believed to be related to a combination of factors such as stress, diet, lifestyle factors, hormones, genetics, and the gut microbiome.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders such as IBS may result from issues with how the brain and gut work together. Communication between the gut and brain is bidirectional, meaning that conditions that affect one can also affect the other.

In males, IBS can be caused by an imbalance in hormones; as men age their testosterone levels decline which can lead to an increase in inflammation and digestive symptoms.

Stress can also trigger IBS in males as it disrupts the balance between the brain and the intestines. Diet is another potential factor for IBS in males; certain foods such as dairy and gluten can trigger symptoms if they are consumed in excess or if the individual has sensitivities or allergies to them.

Common trigger foods for IBS include dairy products, wheat and gluten-containing foods, processed foods, fatty or fried foods, spicy foods, alcohol, caffeine and artificial sweeteners. Stress can also increase sensitivity to certain triggers and exacerbate symptoms.

Finally, lifestyle factors such as lack of exercise or sleep can contribute to an increase in IBS symptoms in men.
