New research explores the connection between emotional intelligence (EI) and its benefits for mindfulness and mental health. Conducted by Evonne Iau and Paul Verhaeghen from the Georgia Institute of Technology, the study reveals that individuals with high emotional intelligence enhance their well-being by fostering better self-awareness and improving relationships with others. The research suggests that understanding one's emotions can lead to greater contentment and overall happiness.
The authors outline three primary ways in which emotional intelligence contributes to mindfulness: it increases self-awareness, promotes self-acceptance, and enhances recognition of interpersonal relationships. Through a validated mindfulness questionnaire administered to college students, the study found that internally focused emotional intelligence serves as a mediator linking mindfulness to positive mental health outcomes. In essence, individuals who are more attuned to their emotions are likely to benefit more from mindfulness practices.
The researchers conclude that developing emotional intelligence is essential for improving mindfulness, which can, in turn, lead to personal growth and enhanced emotional well-being. They assert that “almost all aspects of the mindfulness manifold were related to the capability to understand and use one’s own emotions,” indicating that fostering emotional intelligence is a key step in achieving better mental health.
