"Transforming Soldier Training: The Army's New Focus on Emotional Health and Social Skills"
Date: Sunday 26 Jan 2025
The U.S. Army is implementing a new training approach at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, that emphasizes emotional health, coping strategies, and social skills. Rather than focusing solely on combat preparation, new recruits now learn techniques such as breathing exercises, yoga, and the signs of a toxic relationship. This transformation seeks to address issues like sexual harassment and poor communication skills among younger soldiers, many of whom struggle with face-to-face interactions due to technology addiction.
Tyler Bergman, a drill sergeant, noted that "the Army is looking at the bigger picture," indicating a broader understanding of “battle readiness” that includes social and emotional competencies. The Army is shifting its focus from purely physical fitness to recognizing the importance of effective communication and emotional stability in soldiers. Senior officials plan to expand these training methods throughout the Army, aiming to enhance resilience and overall soldier readiness in modern military life.
